Re-Os geochronology for the Cambrian SPICE event: Insights into euxinia and enhanced continental weathering from radiogenic isotopes

چکیده

Abstract The late Cambrian Steptoean positive carbon isotope excursion (SPICE) represents a major perturbation to the global cycle and was associated with trilobite extinctions expansion of anoxic and/or euxinic water masses during episodes eustatic sea-level change. We present new Re-Os age together Os Nd stratigraphy major- trace-element data from Alum Shale Formation (Scania, Sweden). 494.6 ± 2.9 Ma is interval peak δ13Corg values, providing first radiometric constraint for this excursion, interpreted as possible pre-Mesozoic ocean anoxia event, timing biomere-level extinctions. chemostratigraphic profile can be explained by an increase in terrigenous weathering prior SPICE, potentially driven fall, agreement enhanced nutrient supply, primary productivity, organic matter burial driver SPICE event. Post-SPICE, isotopes become increasingly unradiogenic; however, invariant εNd(t) values argue against change provenance instead support decrease continental flux, possibly related rise.

Re-Os geochronology and coupled Os-Sr isotope constraints on the Sturtian snowball Earth.

After nearly a billion years with no evidence for glaciation, ice advanced to equatorial latitudes at least twice between 717 and 635 Mya. Although the initiation mechanism of these Neoproterozoic Snowball Earth events has remained a mystery, the broad synchronicity of rifting of the supercontinent Rodinia, the emplacement of large igneous provinces at low latitude, and the onset of the Sturtia...

Fluid inclusion characteristics and molybdenite Re-Os geochronology of the Qulong porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit, Tibet

The Qulong porphyry copper and molybdenum deposit is located at the southwest margin of the Lhasa Terrane and in the eastern region of the Gangdese magmatic belt. It represents China’s largest porphyry copper system, with ∼2200 million tonnes of ore comprising 0.5 % Cu and 0.03 % Mo. The mineralization is associated with Miocene granodiorite, monzogranite and quartz-diorite units, which intrude...

Decoupling biogeochemical records, extinction, and environmental change during the Cambrian SPICE event

Several positive carbon isotope excursions in Lower Paleozoic rocks, including the prominent Upper Cambrian Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion (SPICE), are thought to reflect intermittent perturbations in the hydrosphere-biosphere system. Models explaining these secular changes are abundant, but the synchronicity and regional variation of the isotope signals are not well understood. Ex...

Constraints on continental crustal mass loss via chemical weathering using lithium and its isotopes.

Chemical weathering, as well as physical erosion, changes the composition and shapes the surface of the continental crust. However, the amount of continental material that has been lost over Earth's history due to chemical weathering is poorly constrained. Using a mass balance model for lithium inputs and outputs from the continental crust, we find that the mass of continental crust that has be...
